New Millport, Clearfield Co, PA - a farmer
His life was mainly spent at the old home of his family in Knox township, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. In January, 1865, he enlisted in the Union army, and took part in several important engagements, including the siege of Petersburg. At the close of hostilities he returned home with health much impaired, and resumed his business of farming and lumbering, in which he was very successful. The care of his aged relatives occupied his attention for many years.
He was active in local affairs and in the Republican party.
His grandmother lived to the advanced age of ninety-eight, breathing her last December 17, 1867.
He came to Knox township, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, with his parents and spent his life on the farm, clearing the land and erecting substantial buildings. He acquired a large amount of property, at one time owning 600 acres in Clearfield County.
He was a loyal supporter of the Union cause during the War of the Rebellion, and broke down his former robust health through three years of army service. He was a member of Co. F, 100th. Pa. Vol. Inf., the famous "Roundheads." After he returned to Knox township his subsequent life was spent in farming, lumbering and rafting. In politics he was a Republican and the only fraternal organization with which he was connected was the Grange.
He and his wife were the parents of nine children, of whom four survived in 1911.
