General Notes: Husband - Samuel Chess

He remained on the old Chess farm until he was twenty-one years of age, and later was able to purchase an interest in a sawmill. Fortunately for his venture, he was enough of a mechanic to make his own wheel, and was soon sawing three thousand feet of lumber daily. By his ingenuity and economy he saved, in a short time, the sum of $1,800, which he invested in a forty-five acre tract adjoining his property, known as “Maple Grove Farm.” But years of hard and unremitting labors passed before he saw his way clear to comfort and independence, believing, as he did, that it is the duty of a husband and father to be not only just but generous to his family. The final outcome was that he not only provided his household with all the comforts and many of the luxuries of life, but accumulated sufficient to present each of his children with a fifty-acre farm and a good home when they established themselves in the community as married men and women. “Maple Grove Farm,” of which he was so long the prosperous owner, represented the largest sugar camp in northern Mercer County, its product of sugar and maple sugar molasses finding its way to eastern and western markets. Success in that field did not come by chance; for since he was a young boy Mr. Chess had experience in all the details of sugar making, from the collection of the watery sap in pails to the final boiling down into sugar and molasses. But from the active work of “Maple Grove Farm,” as well as from all other arduous labor, Mr. Chess gradually retired, his greatest regret being that his faithful wife could not be with him to share his comforts and pleasures. Mr. Chess’ practical wisdom, as shown by the outcome of his private affairs, was well utilized by the citizens of Sandy Creek Township, who placed their public concerns in his hands through such offices as those of assessor and supervisor and treasurer of the Salem Insurance Company. A man of unimpeachable integrity, he was an earnest churchman, being early a member of the Presbyterian denomination, but in his later years identified with the Salem Methodist society.
