General Notes: Husband - William Penn Townsend
He succeeded to the management and ownership of his father's business, and the firm of R. Townsend & Company was changed to William P. Townsend. He in turn had two sons, Charles C. and Edward P., who succeeded him in the ownership of the business which became known as William P. Townsend & Company, then C. C. & E. P. Townsend, C. C. & E. P. Townsend Company, and later was incorporated as Townsend Company and as such the business was still being carried on, owned and managed by the descendents of the founder, after more than one hundred and ten years.
He received his education in the schools at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and at an early age entered the employ of his father, beginning as a clerk. In 1840, he and his cousin were taken in as partners, the firm name becoming R. Townsend & Company; in 1864, he became sole proprietor. He enlarged the plant, gave employment to many more hands, and put in new and improved machinery. Mr. Townsend delighted in traveling and spent many years in journeying throughout the United States and Europe. He entered the haven of rest at the age of seventy-eight years.
Although he was reared a Quaker, he and his wife became members of the Presbyterian church.
