In 1873 he was appointed county detective, which position he filled for five years, and in 1879 engaged in the hotel business at Karns City. Three years later he opened a hotel at Renfrew, which he carried on for five years, and then returned to Butler, where he established a bakery and confectionery and also engaged in the ice business.
