General Notes: Husband - Euphrastus Carrier
In the year 1820 six brothers, Hiram, Darius, George, Nathan, Euphrastus and John Carrier, purchased ninety-six acres of land and all the mills at Troy, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, they and their descendants continuing to own the same for many years, rebuilding the mills several times. [HJC 1917 ii, 196]
He removed with his parents, from place to place, and about 1811 was living in Oswego, New York. In 1813 or 1814 his parents were living in Freeport, Pennsylvania, and throughout these wanderings he and his twin brother Nathan seem to have been inseparable, and of active and material assistance in the support of the family. They remained in Freeport from 1814 to 1820. In 1818 they, with their father, had the contract for the woodwork of the county bridge across Buffalo creek, near Freeport, and owned a saw and grist mill in that locality.
His father died in 1821 while the family were living on the old "Hulet Smith" place, and the duty of caring for the mother and younger children devolved upon Euphrastus and Nathan. Euphrastus went to Connecticut in 1827, where he married and lived for two years, and then returned to Clover township, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, where he eventually became a prosperous farmer and lived until his death.
In 1828 he settled on the farm which became the old homestead of this branch of the family and later owned and occupied by his son Milton H. Carrier. The same year he went back to Connecticut, the old home of the Carriers, and married, returning in the autumn of 1829 with his wife and child of a few months. He had bought fifty acres in Clover (then Rose) township, and subsequently purchased seventy acres more, developing it until he had a valuable farm and comfortable home. He lumbered on the Clarion river and Red Bank creek.
He was born in Connecticut and settled in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, in 1828, on the farm thereafter known as the old homestead and continuously occupied by members of the Carrier family into the middle of the twentieth century. Soon after his arrival in Jefferson County, he made the trip to Connecticut and brought back with him his wife of a few months, Harriet R. Buell, of Colchester, Connecticut. Having purchased fifty acres in Clover (then Rose) Township, he subsequently purchased seventy more acres and developed it until he had a valuable farm and comfortable home. In his youth, he learned the millwright's trade, adopted by many other members of this family, and acquired a high degree of proficiency in his craft, which led to many demands upon his services. In addition he lumbered on the Clarion River and on Red Bank Creek and successfully operated the homestead farm. [HNWP, 578]
