After finishing school at Brownsville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, he attended the University of Pennsylvania, taking the dental course and graduating in 1882. He located at Uniontown, where he remained for eight years in the practice of his profession. In the spring of 1891 came to Brownsville, where he then continued practising his profession. He was an elder for several years in the Presbyterian church of Brownsville, and was a member of Brownsville Lodge, No. 51, I. O. O. F. and Brownsville Lodge, No. 357, K. of P.
