He was born on his father's farm in Sinking Valley, near Tyrone, Blair County, Pennsylvania. He attended the public schools of that region, and in early manhood became a farmer, continuing that occupation during the remainder of his life. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in the Union army and served as a lieutenant in the One Hundred and Tenth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Upon returning to civil life after the cessation of hostilities, he settled on the old home farm, and there spent the remainder of his days.
