He and his wife were among the first settlers of McCalmont township, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, settling there in 1838, on the present site of Panic, where he followed farming and lumbering. He purchased 180 acres in the wilderness at $1.50 an acre, where he remained until his death.
They were earnest members of the United Brethren Church.
