After completing his early schooling in the district schools of Pine Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, he attended Grove City College and New Castle Business College. He then spent several years at Grove City and but in 1904 became a resident of Harrisville. He entered the employ of the First National Bank of Harrisville in that year and served as cashier of the institution beginning in 1914.
He was a Republican and served as school director. He was an active member of the Presbyterian Church of Harrisville, and was also affiliated with the Masonic Lodge.
