General Notes: Husband - John Brown, Jr.

He came to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with his parents and when a young man entered the dry goods house of John Dean, a prominent merchant of the North Side. A few years later he formed a partnership with his brother-in-law, Robert Taggart, and George Martin to carry on the dry goods business. Mr. Taggart soon withdrew to form other connections, when the business was continued under the firm name of Brown and Martin. Mr. Brown had many business interests. He was a director of the Allegheny Poor Board. In 1865, when the Second National Bank of Allegheny was organized, he was elected its first president, serving in that capacity until his death.
