General Notes: Husband - John Henderson Carothers
He was born at Shaner Station, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and until the age of sixteen attended local public schools. He then began to work for the Westmoreland Coal Company at Irwin and later entered the service of the Pennsylvania Railroad. This was in March, 1889, and he remained many years with the company in the capacity of conductor.
The political allegiance of Mr. Carothers was given to the principles advocated by the Republican party, but he had neither time nor inclination for office-holding. He affiliated with Washington Lodge, No. 253, Free and Accepted Masons, of Pittsburgh, and belonged to the Masonic Mutual Benefit Association of Wilmerding, Pennsylvania, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, No. 1146, of Trafford, the Order of Railroad Conductors, No. 433, of Pitcairn, and the Junior Order of United American Mechanics, No. 120, of Trafford. He also affiliated with the Knights of Malta, Commandery No. 189, of Wilmerding. His religious membership was in the Church of the United Brethren, in which he was an active worker, serving as chairman of the members committee, president of the Temperance League and class stewart of the church. For seven years he was chorister of the choir.
