General Notes: Husband - John M. Hawk
He was born in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, and was only nine years old when brought to Armstrong County, where he was reared and educated. After his marriage, he moved to Indiana County again, but remained there only one year, returning to Armstrong County, where he had his home for the next two years. At the end of that time he moved to St. Petersburg, Clarion County, where his son, Dr. M. C. Hawk, was born, and from there to Buena Vista, Butler County, where he remained a year. Coming back to Armstrong County, he settled in Washington township, where he remained for fifteen years. He later lived in North Buffalo township, Armstrong County, one mile from Kittanning. He followed the carpenter's trade all his life. He was a prominent member of the First Baptist Church of Kittanning, of which he was a deacon for seventeen years; was a member of Lodge No. 515, I. O. O. F., at Cowansville, and politically gave his allegiance to the Washington party.
He spent his early life on a farm in the great pine timber belt of Indiana County, Pennsylvania, five miles from Punxsutawney. His father was both farmer and lumberman, having a large saw mill on his place. After his marriage Mr. Hawk settled in the Armstrong and Clarion County oil fields and worked at his trade, that of carpenter, changing locations as the oil booms shifted. About 1875 he bought a farm near Montgomeryville, where he lived for several years, later removing to a house he built on the west bank of the Allegheny River near Kittanning. Mr. Hawk was a well-known contractor and builder, erecting buildings of every size and for every purpose. He and his wife were members of the First Baptist Church of Kittanning, where he held the office of senior deacon.
