He entered mercantile pursuits with his father and brother; retired from active trade in 1858. He was a director in the Monongahela National Bank and in the Monongahela Bridge Company. He long lived in retirement and elegance at "Nemacolin," an eminence which commanded a fine view of the Mohongahela River and surrounding country,-the same property which his father, Jacob Bowman, bought of Thomas Brown in 1788.

At twelve years of age he entered Washington and Jefferson college, where he took a four years' course. After his graduation he engaged in mercantile business and continued in same with remarkable success until 1855, when he retired from active business. He was an honored vice-president of the Monongahela Bank of his town, a bank the doors of which have never been shut nor specie payment suspended during the Civil war.
