The Bowmans are of an old English family of high standing. The first that we know of them is that they were residents of Cumberland county, England, where they lived for many generations. Stephen Bowman is the first name that has been handed down to us, and his third son was Robert. At the age of fifteen Robert Bowman was placed as a page in the household of Elizabeth, daughter of King James I. In 1613 Elizabeth married Frederick V, Elector of Palatine of Germany. Young Bowman continued in her service, going with her to Germany, where in 1618 he married and thus founded the German branch of the Bowman family.
