As a young man he entered the mercantile business, first as clerk and subsequently as proprietor, owning establishments at different times in Manorville, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, and in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County. His political party was the Republican, and he was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
