He attended the public schools of his home neighborhood and later Waynesburg College. Having determined to devote his life to the medical profession, he began reading medicine with Dr. E. H. Craig, an old time physician of Prosperity, Pennsylvania, and later matriculated in Jefferson Medical College, at Philadelphia, where he was graduated in 1887, with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. He began the practice of his profession at West Union, Pennsylvania, but in June, 1889, he located in Bentleyville, where he continued in the active practice up to the present time. From 1889 to 1903 he was in partnership with his brother-in-law, Dr. Edward E. French. He was a member of the Washington County Medical Society, the Pennsylvania State Medical Society and the American Medical Association, having served as president of the county society in 1921. He was a member of the Washington Chamber of Commerce and a director of the Farmers & Miners Bank of Bentleyville. Politically, he was a lifelong supporter of the democratic party and served as a member of the school board for twenty-six years and one year as a member of the borough council. He was a member and elder in the First Presbyterian church. Fraternally he was a member of Beallsville Lodge, No. 237, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons; Monongahela Chapter, No. 249, Royal Arch Masons; McKean Commandery, No. 80, Knights Templar, at Charleroi; Pennsylvania Consistory of Scottish Rite Masons, at Pittsburgh; Syria Temple, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, at Pittsburgh, and Bentleyville Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows. During the first World War he was a member of the Volunteer Medical Corps.
