General Notes: Husband - James Blair

He and his wife located their home in the thickly wooded heights of Elk Creek Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania, in 1803. They came from Fayette County, floating their household effects to Meadville, from whence they were brought on horseback. They paid $50 for 400 acres of land, and, after paying taxes on it seven years, abandoned it. Mr. Blair subsequently made a purchase in Girard township, later occupied by his son David, where he and his wife passed the remainder of their lives.

His parents were both natives of Pennsylvania; his father died when he was a child. James came to Erie County in 1803, and was engaged on the preliminary survey of the county. About two years later he settled permanently on Elk creek, in Girard township. He took up 400 acres of land, but owing to some deficiency in his title, later he had to repurchase it. He followed pioneer farming, devoting much time to clearing his land of the timber, and taught school some.

He and his wife were born in eastern Pennsylvania, and both crossed the mountains when they were young, and they were there married. Coming to Girard township in Erie County in 1803, James Blair secured a piece of land, and in the following year brought his family there. This farm was located about three miles south of Girard, and the initial purchase consisted of one hundred and one acres, heavily covered with timber, but in time he succeeded in clearing and placing it under cultivation, and he lived and died in the little log house which he erected thereon. James Blair was a Whig, active in politics, and he served as an assessor and as a township collector. Both he and his wife were earnest members of the Presbyterian church, and he helped to organize the church of that denomination in Girard and was one of its first elders.

Notes: Marriage

They were the parents of eight children (another source: six); Samuel was the youngest.
