General Notes: Husband - Henry Calvin Black

He was left an orphan at the age of ten years, and then went to live with his uncle, Alexander Black, with whom he made his home until of age. He received a good common school education, and afterwards attended a Commercial College in Pittsburgh. Mr. Black clerked for a few years in West Virginia, and subsequently in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and in 1864 embarked in the mercantile business at Balm, where he carried on business for three years. In 1867 he located at Harrisville, where he clerked for Harris & Morrow, and afterwards became a member of the firm of Morrow & Black. He finally became sole proprietor of the business, later took his two oldest sons into partnership, and carried on under the firm name of Black & Sons until his death. In 1867 he united with the Presbyterian church of Centre, served as elder in the church at Harrisville for some years, and then transferred his membership to the United Presbyterian church of Harmony. Politically, he was a stanch Republican, and always took an active interest in public affairs. He filled several of the borough offices, and was one of its progressive and public-spirited citizens.

He was reared on the farm in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, being but ten years of age at the time of his father's death. He was educated in the public schools and at Duff's Business College, Pittsburgh. When a young man he engaged in mercantile business in Blacktown, Mercer County, and later moved to Harrisville, Butler County, where he was in business more than thirty-seven years. He was a successful merchant, and was prominent in public affairs. He was one of the recognized leaders of the Republican party in that section of the country, and though frequently urged to accept office he invariably declined, but often acted as delegate to conventions. He was an active member of the Presbyterian church, in which for many years he held the office of elder.
