General Notes: Husband - J. U. Kuhns

He was educated in the public schools, and began business life as an employee of Thomas Donohoe & Company, merchants. From mercantile life, he passed to the coal and coke business, and for many years was an important figure in that line of activity. In 1900, in association with W. A. Wilson, he organized the Mount Pleasant Coke Company, of which he was president, the company operating two mines, three hundred and forty coke ovens, and furnishing employment to six hundred hands, covering five hundred acres. In 1901 Mr. Kuhns, again in association with Mr. Wilson, organized the Veteran Coke Company, of which he was a director, the mines and one hundred and twenty ovens of this company employing one hundred and fifty hands. They also organized the Mount Hope Coke Company, in connection with Isaac Taylor, of Uniontown, but that company they later sold to the Snowden Coke Company. In 1906 they organized the Mount Pleasant Connellsville Coke Company, of which Mr. Kuhns was president; the mines of that company, located near Mount Pleasant, Westmoreland County, employed seven hundred hands, and had one thousand ovens. Mr. Kuhns was also a director of the Donohoe Coke Company.
In addition to his extensive coke interests, Mr. Kuhns was also a member of the Greensburg mercantile house, Kuhns & Barnhart, successors to Donohoe, Kuhns & Barnhart, one of the old established firms of the city, and a member of the firm of Hudson & Kuhns, successors to Donohoe, Hudson & Kuhns, grain dealers. In 1916 Mr. Kuhns erected the Kuhns Block on North Main street, Greensburg, a three-story brick building, the first floor occupied by Kuhns & Barnhart, the second by the Mount Pleasant Coke Company, the third floor, apartments. He also erected a modern grain elevator for the use of Hudson & Kuhns in their business, and his private residence, erected in 1917, was one of the best in the city. He was a Democrat in politics, a member of the Lutheran church, and of several business and social organizations.
