General Notes: Husband - James Albert Porch

He was born on the old Porch homestead, which later became his property. For his education he attended the local common school. After completing his schooling, he continued to live with his father and assist him with the operation of the farm and this continued until he had reached the age of thirty-five years, when his marriage took place. He then engaged in the lumber business and operated a portable saw mill, continuing thus for about fifteen years. He bought some valuable timber land, and after clearing it sold it to some of the mining interests in the neighborhood. He continued to deal in lumber, with which he supplied the local market. About the year 1914, Mr. Porch purchased the old Porch homestead, which had been allowed to pass out of the possession of the family, and made his home there. It consisted of some one hundred and forty acres of land and the original house still stood there. It was situated in Mount Pleasant township on the old Clay pike in Westmoreland County, about three-fourths of a mile east of Kecksburg. For twenty-five years or more Mr. Porch was engaged in raising cattle for the local meat market, purchasing steers while young and fattening them to be sold at retail by him in the nearby mining town. Mr. Porch was a Republican in politics and played an prominent part in connection with the local organization of that party and held a number of important public offices. For eight years he was township collector and was under bond for one hundred and thirty thousand dollars, his bondsmen remaining the same during the full eight years. He collected about one hundred and fifty thousand dollars per annum.
He was a keen hunter, enjoying all kinds of outdoor sports.
