General Notes: Husband - John C. Fox

After his marriage he moved to the old Beck farm, near Seanor's Church, in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, starting out as a tenant farmer and with fifty cents as his cash capital, beside a few farm implements of the rudest character and a horse which he obtained from his father for his feed. His wife got one cow from home when she moved and with this one cow and a heifer, which John C. Fox had, the whole stock of the farm was summed up, with the exception of a pair of pigs and a few chickens. From this he built up, trading one cow and borrowing some money to buy a second horse the second year. He raked his father's wheatfield after it was cut and from this got sufficient wheat to feed himself and his wife the first year. Their health was good and they were both willing to work hard to own their own home. In March, 1873, they decided they would like to own the place where they were living, which contained one hundred and eighty-one acres, and accordingly negotiated a deal at sixty-five dollars per acre, by which they could pay for it in installments. The arrangement was that they should pay down two thousand dollars on April 1, 1874, and five hundred dollars a year thereafter without interest until all was paid. Possession was to be taken April 1, 1873. The undertaking, though large, was a success, and during the payments an additional fifty-four acres, without buildings, at fifty dollars, were also paid for, and the house was remodeled in 1876 and re-roofed. The brick farmhouse on the property was built by Michael Beck about 1838, and there all of the married life of John C. Fox and his wife was spent, and there she died September 10, 1917, at the age of seventy-seven. To the original one hundred and eighty-one acres were added the fifty-four acres acquired as beforementioned by Mr. Fox. Later he sold this additional piece of ground and the farm reverted to its original size, until Mrs. Fox, on April 8, 1882, purchased a forty-acre tract from John Errett, adjoining on the south. While Mr. Fox conducted a general farming business, he made a specialty of cattle raising and feeding until 1882, when he sold his stock at a public sale. He invested the proceeds in property in Jeannette, and intended to give up the farm and establish himself in that town. This plan was never carried out and he resided on the farm until his death. He was a Democrat in his political opinions, but never cared to hold public office, and was very independent in his voting, and held himself ready to support the best man for the office aside from his party affiliations. He was a member of the Seanor's Reformed Church.

General Notes: Wife - Elizabeth C. Bierer

She was born at the family homestead two miles west of Greensburg, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, just north of where the Carbon Coal Works later stood. For over half a century she resided in the brick house erected by Michael Beck about 1838. There her children were born and there her married life of forty years was happily spent.
