General Notes: Husband - John George Fox

He was born at the family homestead where he resided through his life. After he came into possession of the farm, a tract of nineteen acres of timber was sold off of the place, it being cut off from the main part of the farm by the old clay pike, leaving the farm containing one hundred and sixty-two acres in 1906, in which year about three-quarters of an acre more was disposed of for cemetery purposes to the Seanor's Cemetery Association, as that section of the farm adjoined the old cemetery where lay the remains of Mr. Fox's grandparents, parents, and sister. He was given a good common school and business education, and as he was the only child living he remained at home, and after the death of his father took up the care of the farm. But he was ambitious to venture into other fields than those of farm work, and became interested in a mining proposition in Twilingale, Newfoundland, in the spring of 1907. In the autumn of 1909, he went to look into the conditions of the scheme, and came back full of enthusiasm. Mr. Fox did much to keep the company on an honest basis and foil the attempts of some schemes intended to "freeze out" the smaller investors. By about 1918 the years of difficulty were about at an end and the mine was just about ready to turn out the precious ore. While his financial support was going to the mining company, Mr. Fox was changing his general farming activities to specialize in dairying, and in this he was assisted by his sons, who remained at home and made the business a success. In 1911, for this line of work, a seventy-ton tile silo was built.
