He was educated in the public and high schools of Butler, Pennsylvania, from which he was graduated in 1900. He took a business course in Butler Business College and graduated in 1905, after which he entered the employ of the Standard Steel Car Company as assistant foreman in the shops. He remained with this company until he was elected city treasurer in 1924.
He was a Republican and belonged to the First Presbyterian Church. Fraternally he was affiliated with the Knights of Pythias and Lions Club.
