He was born near Winchester, Virginia, and attended the schools of his native state. After attaining his majority, he left home and commenced farming in Washington County, Pennsylvania, there passing the remainder of his life, with the exception of six years he spent in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.

He was born on the farm near Bentleyville, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and attended the log cabin subscription schools of the neighborhood. At the age of eighteen years he came to a farm in East Pike Run township, this county, remaining there fifteen years.
