He came to America from Wales and settled in Philadelphia, PA. He was a shoe­maker and manufacturer and employed in his Philadelphia shops a large force of men mak­ing boots and shoes by the hand method. He was a man of wealth, and gave his two sons, Richard and David, all the advantages of edu­cation, intending both to enter the ministry.

There was another David Thomas, also from Wales, born 1794, who is the emigrant ancestor of the Thomas family of Catasauqua, Pennsyl­vania, constituting the Thomas Iron Company.
