General Notes: Husband - [Ancestor] Stevenson

The surname Stevenson or Stephenson belongs to the numerous class of patronymics derived from Christian or given names, and signifies "son of Stephen." The family is an ancient one both in England and in Scotland, and in both countries groups and individuals bearing the name were entitled to bear arms.
Arms-Argent, a chevron between three fleurs-de-lis azure; on a chief of the last as many mullets of the first.
Crest-A dexter hand issuing out of a cloud holding a laurel garland, all proper.
Motto-Coelum non solum. (Heaven not earth.)
Burke, in his "General Armory," records fourteen coats-of-arms for branches of the family using the form Stevenson, located in counties Cumberland, Warwick, Derby, Lincolnshire, and Cheshire in England; and at Edinburgh, Hermishiels, Mount Gram, and other districts in Scotland. Of the fourteen armorial bearings thus recorded eight carry as principal charges a chevron between three fleurs-de-lis. Others show the bend and three leopards' faces, which are frequently used by those spelling the name Stephenson. The armorial bearings described above are those recorded for Stevenson in the "Lion Register," Scotland.
Members of the family settled in Ireland at an early date, among these being the ancestors of Andrew Stevenson, whose line is traced here.
The question as to whether the father of Andrew Stevenson went to Ireland from Scotland or from Cheshire, England, has been raised, and remains unanswered so far as records are concerned, but circumstantial evidence points to Scotland as the origin of this branch of the family. It is certain that in Pennsylvania the Stevensons were generally known as "Scotch-Irish," and the fact that they settled among the Scotch-Irish is significant. Family tradition relates that three brothers left their home at the same time, one going to Enniskillen, Ireland, one to Raphoe, Ireland, a third to Chester, Pennsylvania. 1
