He was born in Germany and in 1827 emi­grated to America and settled on a farm in Knox township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. He remained there until the discovery of gold in California in 1849, and then, becoming im­bued with the prevailing excitement, he started west and died during his journey to the gold fields.
