He was a well known and very prominent citizen of Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, a descendant of John Watson, founder of Watsontown.

Through his marriage with Margaret Wilson he was allied with the Pollock, Montgomery and Sample families, of the West Branch of the Susquehanna.
