He was educated in the private and select schools of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, especially under an eminent mathematician, James Maginnis. He learned the trade of cabinet-maker with his father, and, after the latter's death, continued the business alone up to 1864, after that period for several years in connection with Mr. Boyd.
