He was educated in the public schools of Ligonier, Pennsylvania. He assisted his father in the livery business and then, having graduated from the Pittsburgh School of Anatomy, entered the ranks of the undertakers. He was employed by Lafferty & Tobias, of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church of Ligonier.
