He was a doctor of philosophy and chemistry, he having been one-fifth owner of a celebrated chemical works in Germany, but owing to unexpected financial reverses, he removed to America and accepted the position of first chemist for the Pennsylvania Salt-Manufacturing company, whose works were located at Natrona.
