James A. Snyder, 71, Well-Known Resident, Dies: Rites Tuesday
James Albert Snyder, 71, one of Franklin's best-known residents, and an oil company employe in South America for many years, died at 10:05 p. m. Saturday at his home, 1128 Liberty Street.
Mr. Snyder was injured in a fall two years ago at the front of his home. He never fully recovered from this mishap although be apparently was responding to treatment until his condition became serious about two weeks ago.
A native of Franklin, he was born on July 9, 1888, a son of Albert J. and Mary Jones Snyder. He attended the local schools and business college in Franklin.
He started his employe with the Galena Oil Co. and later worked in the office of the Galena Signal Oil Co. on Liberty Street.
In 1912 he went to Peru, South America, as an employe of Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey, joining his father who had been with the company there for a year.
Directed Transportation
He was drilling superintendent for a time and later took over as transportation manager for the vast oil company holdings. He had charge of the 250 miles of railroads on the property, supervised huge gardens operated by the oil company and was director of several shops which helped with the transportation work and repairs.
Mr. Snyder and the former Mabel Kingsley Smith, of Franklin, were united in marriage on April 22, 1915, in the Little Church Around the Corner in New York City. After a short stay in the states, they returned to Peru where they made their home in Negritos, a town comprised primarily of oil company personnel.
In 1930 Mr. Snyder retired from Standard Oil and he and his family went to Mercer to make their home. Three years later they returned to Franklin and resided at the Snyder home on Liberty Street for a short time.
Enjoyed Large Garden
The Snyders purchased Glen Moy, one of the Franklin area show places located on Route 322, east of the city, in 1935. Mr. Snyder, who was a gardening enthusiast, enjoyed maintaining the property and planting an abundance of flowers and shrubs.
The ponds in the glen in back of the house were stocked with trout and a variety of projects added enjoyment to the interesting property.
In 1954, the Snyders sold Glen Moy and moved to Franklin. In recent years, Mr. Snyder was known to many persons through his familiar "office" at the corner of Thirteenth and Liberty Streets. He drove to the business section daily, parking his car at the same spot. From there he greeted passersby, many friends stopped in for a chat and he even received mail from acquaintances at this post.
A man of genial nature, be was known by many for his kind deeds, performed in a quiet and unassuming manner. Many persons with whom he came in contact knew first-hand of his kindly disposition and he had many friends from all circles and walks-of-life.
Was Active Outdoorsman
An ardent hunter and fisherman, he had a large gun collection and until his recent illness he was able to enjoy his two favorite sports. While in Peru, he hunted in the Andes and he had a handsome collection of many Peruvian objects, including relics from early Inca tribes.
After moving from Glen Moy, Mr. Snyder still desired to have a spot in the country and purchased a farm above Endeavor at the edge of the Allegheny National Forest, which he maintained as a hunting camp and summer retreat
He was a member of many organizations, including Franklin Lodge No. 110, B.P.O. of Elks; the Rotary Club, the Franklin Club, the Izaak Walton League of America, and a social member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Tri-City Lodge No. 50.
Active in Masonic branches, he was a member of Myrtle Lodge No. 316, F. & A. M.; Venango Lodge of Perfection, Oil City; New Castle Consistory; Syria Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S., Pittsburgh; and Venango County Shrine Club.
He formerly served on the Franklin Hospital Board of Directors and was a member and past president of the Wanango Club. When his health permitted he was a fine golfer and he enjoyed promoting the club and many of its projects.
