General Notes: Husband - John Ulysses Williams
He spent his childhood and early youth on his father's farm. He obtained his education at the local public schools, and then turned his attention to assisting his father in the operation of the latter's farm. He remained with the elder man until he had reached the age of twenty-nine years, when he received at his father's hands the present of a handsome farm in the vicinity of what became known as the village of Reduction and started upon independent agricultural operations there. He spent twenty-one years at this place and came to be regarded as one of the most successful agriculturists in the surrounding region. In the year 1910 he purchased the H. T. Hanna farm, a large and fertile property consisting of about one hundred and eighty acres which adjoined the old Williams homestead. This farm was one of the best known in the whole of Westmoreland county, Mr. Hanna having enjoyed the reputation at that time as perhaps the foremost farmer in the township. It was this gentleman, the former owner, who built a fine basement barn in 1870, while the brick residence dated back to the time of his father. The farm was a particularly choice body of land and is kept in the highest state of fertility and cultivation by Mr. Williams. It was the home of his magnificent herd of Holstein cattle, several of which were registered. Mr. Williams did not specialize, however, in any particular branch of agriculture, but carried on general farming on his place. He and his brothers owned an almost continuous body of land which was considered to be the finest in the whole region and which extended for nearly two miles.
After the death of his father, John Ulysses Williams held the position of director of the First National Bank of Smithton. He also served for fourteen years or more as a member of the township school board, as so many of his forebears had done before him, and held the post of secretary of that board for eleven years. He was also entrusted by the community with the preparation of the township tax list, an examination of which would show that he was himself about the highest taxpayer there.
He and his entire family were United Presbyterians in their religious belief and attended the church of that denomination at West Newton. Mr. Williams was a Democrat in politics. He did not use intoxicating liquor of any kind.
Notes: Marriage
There seems to be confusion in the book about the Boyd family, as it lists Polly Ann Rhodes and the wife of another John Ulysses Williams, son of Joseph Scott Williams, and nephew of this John Ulysses Williams.
