General Notes: Husband - David Hough Williams
He was born on the paternal farm in South Huntingdon township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and a portion of his boyhood days were spent in the home of his grandfather in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, where he attended school and acquired a good education. On attaining manhood he engaged in farming on his father's farm, and some three or four years after marriage located on another farm, later owned by his son, Joseph S. Williams, where he resided up to his death, at the age of seventy-one years. He was successful in his undertakings, which were conducted on an extensive scale, and thereby secured a competence for his declining years. He was a Democrat in politics, and while never seeking political preferment held many of the township offices.
While still a young man, shortly after his marriage, he settled on a farm which was later owned by his son, Joseph S. Williams. The property consisted of one hundred and sixty acres, and here Mr. Williams built a house and barn. He was very active in the commercial and business interests of the region, and for several years conducted a large warehouse at Smithton. He was also the original organizer of the First National Bank of Smithton and served as its first president. This office he held until his death, at the age of seventy-two years. While Mr. Williams was not a communicant of any church, he was strongly in sympathy with religious work, and now lies buried with his wife in the cemetery of the Huffman Lutheran Church. In politics he was an Independent Democrat, and served for a considerable period on the school board, as his father before him.
He was regarded as one of the most successful business men who ever lived in South Huntingdon township. He was the owner of a very large amount of valuable farm property, and as each son came of age and entered upon an independent career, he presented him with a handsome farm, all of them in the immediate neighborhood, so that the family continued united to a remarkable degree. The father up to the very time of his death retained a strong interest in their welfare and watched their progress to success most closely, always standing ready to aid them with any substantial assistance that was in his power.
