He was born in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, and removed to Mechanicsburg, Cook township, Westmoreland County, where he engaged in farming for nine years. At the end of that time he purchased an estate of ninety-six acres on which he made his home during the remainder of his life. He was a Republican, and a leader in the Church of the United Brethren at Pleasant Grove.
