General Notes: Husband - Jay Warren Smail

John Fallone went to the Smail home at Mateer, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, to see their daughter, Gladys, but she didn't want anything to do with him. He left when her father told him to do so, but came back with a deer rife, walked into the house, and shot both parents. He yelled at Gladys, who was hiding upstairs with the other children, to come downstairs. He shot her in the chest, but she survived. When Allen Smail drove up, he shot him, too. He then put sticks of dynamite under the kitchen table, firing at them from the outside, but they wouldn't go off. Fallone, who was 17, was later shot in an exchange of gunfire with the police.
