He graduated at Jefferson College in 1830, studied theology at Canonsburg, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and was licensed to preach by Chartiers Presbytery in 1834. He was the first president of Westminster College, New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, and president of Ohio Central College in 1867.
