General Notes: Husband - James McGee, Sr.
In 1826 he brought his family to Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, locating at what later became known as McGee's Mills, in Bell township, which at that time was an unbroken wilderness. He secured a large tract of land on and near the west branch of the Susquehanna river, where he at once commenced to improve a farm, and also erected the first gristmill in that section of the county. Later he built and operated a sawmill, engaging extensively in the manufacture of lumber, and he took the first raft of lumber down the river to market. In company with Gov. Bigler, Mr. McGee engaged in general merchandising, and was instrumental in securing the post office, known as Chest post office, serving as its postmaster from its establishment in 1830 until his death. He was a Democrat in politics, but was allowed to retain the position through all administrations. His friends often solicited him to become a candidate for office, but he usually refused. Finally he was nominated for assemblyman, but was defeated by a small majority. He was an active and influential member of the Methodist Protestant Church, to which his wife also belonged; he was licensed to exhort and, later, to preach.
He came from Centre County in 1826, settling in Bell township, where they were among the prominent families. James McGee was the first postmaster at McGees Mills, when the first mail route was established between Curwensville and Indiana in 1833 and the McGees were charter members of the pioneer M. E. church in Bell township, this-being about 1860.
