General Notes: Husband - John Mitchell

In his early years he was a blacksmith but did not work long at that trade, engaging in farming in Burnside township, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, where he reared his family. At that time he owned 250 acres of land, which he sold in late middle life and moved to the state of Kansas, where the remainder of his life was spent.
He and his wife were members of the Protestant Methodist church.

He was born in Centre County, Pennsylvania, and during his boyhood came with his parents to Clearfield County, where he was reared to manhood. After his father's death he assumed the management of the home farm and assisted his widowed mother for many years. He married and located on a tract of land which his father had purchased. After the death of his mother he and his brother, C. C. Mitchell, purchased the interests of the other heirs in the estate, but later in life he sold his property in Pennsylvania and removed to Kansas, where he operated a farm until his death. By trade he was a blacksmith, and followed that pursuit in connection with farming and lumbering. While in Clearfield County he improved nearly one hundred acres of land, and erected thereon substantial buildings. He also rafted his own lumber down to market. He never aspired to public office, but gave to the Republican party his stanch support. Both he and his wife were members of the Methodist Protestant Church.
