General Notes: Husband - Ephraim Rose

In September, 1798, Ephraim and Jacob Rose came from Centre County, Pennsylvania, via Phillipsburg, Brookville, etc., to what is now Pine Township, Mercer County. Their means of conveyance was a pack-horse, which carried a scanty supply of provisions, cooking utensils, an ax, grubbing hoe and rifle. After selecting a 440 acre tract, they built their cabin on the southeast corner and commenced clearing. Their first crop was turnips. The next year Jacob returned to bring the family out.

In the month of September, 1798, James and Ephraim Rose, brothers, came from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and settled on a 400-acre tract, in the west part of Pine township, Mercer County. The farm was later owned by James Rose, Jr., and was one of the finest in the neighborhood, which abounded in fine farms and excellent improvements. Ephraim Rose was twenty years of age when he came, and his brother was but fourteen. They built a cabin and a stable, and wintered on the place. They had brought a considerable supply of provisions with them, but, as both were expert with the rifle, they depended on it, to a great extent, for their supply of meat. They also commenced a clearing on the place the same season they came. In the spring of the following year, 1799, their father came out, and brought with him his other four sons. They put in their first grain in 1799, and Mr. Rose, that season, also built him a larger house, enlarged his stables, and made all necessary arrange-ments for entertaining travelers over night, although he did not keep a regular tavern. He was the first one of the family who died, after their removal to Mercer County. [HMC 1877, 60]
