He was born in what eventually became Mahoning township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. After a residence of fifty-two years in Mahoning township, he moved to New Wilmington in the spring of 1854, and settled on there.
When a youth of seventeen, he united with the Presbyterian church, in which body he, for nearly forty years, held the office of Ruling Elder.
In educational matters, also, he always took a deep and lively interest, and for a number of years filled the position of school director.

He had one daughter with his first wife and five sons with his second wife.
