He studied medicine with his father and graduated at the University of Pennsylvania in 1871. Two years later was appointed surgeon in the United States marine service, serving in the hospitals of New York, Boston, and Philadelphia respectively. He began private practice in 1877 in Lancaster, and later served several terms as surgeon to the Lancaster County Hospital. He was a member of the State and County Medical Societies.
