He read medicine with his father and Dr. Benjamin Rush, and took his degree at the University of Pennsylvania with the class of 1838. After graduation he became associated with his father, and soon accumulated a large and remunerative practice. Aside from his private practice, he was consulting and visiting physician to the Lancaster County Hospital. He was an active member of the board of Councils of the city, and also a member of the County Medical Society. In 1869 he was appointed by President Grant collector of internal revenue of the Ninth District, which office he held until his death.
