He grew to manhood on the home farm and obtained a public school education in Goshen township, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. His business interests were almost entirely agricultural and he resided both before and after his marriage on the farm on which he was born. He owned ninety-six acres of valuable land, and had all of his land under cultivation, with the exception of forty acres in woodland.
He was a member of the Goshen Grange.
He and his family were members of the Methodist Episcopal church. In politics he was a Republican, but took no active part in public affairs.
