He graduated at West Point in 1876; lost his leg at Fort Brown, Texas, and was later a merchant at Cornwall, Pennsylvania.

He graduated from the West Point Military Academy and was stationed in the southwest for several years with the rank of lieutenant. He resigned and later owned and conducted a store at Lebanon, Pennsylvania.
