He was an undertaker by occupation.

After completing his schooling in the local schools, he attended Slippery Rock State Normal School. He was interested in the business which was conducted by his grandfather and father and became associated with J. F. Gardner, of Slippery Rock.
He was a Democrat and served as burgess of Slippery Rock and also as a member of the local school board for many years. He held membership in the Presbyterian Church and belonged to the Knights of Pythias.
