He received his early education in local public schools, graduated in 1886 from Monmouth College with the degree of Master of Arts, and in 1890 graduated from Xenia Seminary. After filling pastorates at Spring Hill, Indiana, and Cleveland, Ohio, he became, in 1904, president of Monmouth College, Monmouth Illinois.
