He left his native county of Donegal, Ireland, in 1829, and came to what is now East Franklin township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, where he purchased two hundred acres of land, and was engaged in farming until his death. He was an early settler in the township, was a member of the United Presbyterian church, and supported the Republican party from the time of its organization until his death.
