His education was begun in the public schools of Sewickley, Pennsylvania, and completed in the University of Western Pennsylvania, at Pittsburgh, an institution that he attended for one year. He then entered the coal shipping business with his father, coming to Beaver, Pennsylvania, in 1909, establishing in the sand business at Baden, Beaver County, transacting business as the Pittsburgh Sand and Supply Company, his brother Edwin N., becoming a member of the firm. They were the possessors of, and leased, some of the best sand pits of the state, and supplied a large and remunerative trade. Although Mr. McDonald's business centered at Baden, he had his home in Beaver, commuting daily. He was a Democrat in political belief. Religiously the family were members of the First Presbyterian Church of Beaver.
