General Notes: Husband - Henry Mercur

In 1799 he was sent by his parents to Vienna, Austria, to be educated at the University, and remained there eight years, a portion of the time probably being spent with a brother of his father, for whom he was named. Both his parents died in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, before his return in 1807, and after settling up their small estate, he went on a prospecting tour to the frontiers of the United States, and in 1809 located at what later became Towanda, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, where he took up lands and followed the business of a hatter until 1845, when he sold his landed and other interests there and went to Illinois, where he took up large tracts of land, and remained in that state until 1865, when he returned to Towanda, and resided there until his death.
While abroad he received a fine scientific and classical education, and was one of the best educated men of his time.
